Climate action

Contributing to the fight against global warming thanks to our low-carbon strategy, by subscribing to the 2°C scenario of the Paris Agreement.

With more than 360 million products sold each year worldwide, we are aware of our responsibility and have placed environmental issues at the heart of our Sustainable Development strategy.

We are committed to gradually reducing our greenhouse gas emissions in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and participate in the planet’s global effort to limit global warming.

ANALYSIS OF THE GROUP'S GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

In 2017, Groupe SEB launched an assessment of the greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted along the entire length of its supply chain. This analysis was performed according to data for 2016 with the help of the consultancy firm Deloitte. It distinguishes scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions that are directly linked to the Group’s production activities from so-called indirect scope 3 emissions.

  • Scope 1:    emissions linked to the consumption of fossil fuels (mostly natural gas) used for certain industrial processes or to heat buildings on the Group’s ISO 14001-certified industrial and logistics sites.
  • Scope 2: emissions caused by the consumption of electricity bought on the Group’s industrial and logistics sites.
  • Scope 3: indirect emissions that are not directly linked to the manufacture of products (e.g. purchases of goods and services, the use of products sold, and downstream and upstream transport).

Groupe SEB’s total emissions in 2016 amounted to 15.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent. These break down as follows:

TARGETS: SHORT AND LONG-TERM

 

1st phase: targets for 2020

Seeking to shrink our environmental footprint, in 2013 we set four ambitious targets for 2020:

REDUCTION IMPACTS

Here are the results at the end of 2019:

  • 11% lower energy consumption by electrical products (base year: 2013)
  • 21,3% lower energy consumption by production plants (base year: 2010)
  • 35% minimum recycled materials in the new products and their packaging.
  • 33% lower greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation of products and components (per product sold) (base year: 2013).

2nd phase: towards carbon neutrality - SCIENCE-BASED TARGETS

To strengthen its contribution to combating climate change, in 2016 Groupe SEB joined the Science Based Targets initiative launched by the WWF, alongside the Global Compact (UN), the WRI (World Resources Institute) and the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project). This initiative encourages large companies worldwide to align their greenhouse gas emission reduction targets with the IPCC’s recommendations for limiting the average global temperature rise to below 2° C by the end of the century.

In 2018, the Group set out its own short and long-term SBT targets, that pick up on its 2020 targets. They were officially approved by the SBT Initiative (SBTi) in early 2019. Groupe SEB is thus amongst the 100 leading companies worldwide to have brought their low-carbon strategy into line with the Paris Accord.

LOW-CARBON STRATEGY

The Group, therefore, aims to reduce its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions in three stages. To achieve this, it has set up specific governance and specified the priorities:

The “product manufacturing” low-carbon strategy is divided into three axes:

  • reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from plants,
  • the increase in their renewable energy sources
  • compensation for residual greenhouse gas emissions as a last resort

The “product energy consumption” low-carbon strategy is coordinated via the eco-design road-map. In 2019, under this road-map, two dedicated meetings were held for each product category to adjust the action priorities to its particularities.

In general, actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to the use of products related to:

  • product repairability,
  • the integration of recycled materials,
  • consumer awareness of the correct use of products
  • reducing the energy consumption of products (eco-design).

ECO-DESIGN

To reduce the environmental footprint of products throughout their life cycle, we have implemented an eco-design policy set out in a guide. The Eco-Design Guide contains objectives for all the phases in the life cycle of a product and its packaging and specifies our priority focuses in terms of eco-design.

The Group’s eco-design policy includes product packaging. It is aimed at ensuring that it correctly fulfills its protective, storage, transport, information and handling functions while minimizing its environmental impact.

To reduce the greenhouse gas emissions related to our manufacturing, we implemented a global environmental management system back in 2003. Our approach has produced results, with 94% of our sites gradually obtaining ISO 14001 certification.

BIODIVERSIty

The Group's biodiversity policy is based on two axes. The first is to reduce as much as possible the pressure exerted by its activities on the environment (Eco-production). These include combating climate change and overexploitation of resources, and limiting land use (or change in use). The second axis aims to promote biodiversity through specific actions (conservatory gardens, shelters for wildlife, maintenance of wetlands, etc.).
